Shutdown explores how body language communicates. Despite compassionate and well-meaning hands reaching out to help, I often feel even more overwhelmed because of the sensory overload that comes with those people reaching out. The creature in the center of the piece depicts how we can shutdown even when people are trying to help.

Shutdown

Beginning with two cardboard circles, I created a loom with yarn between the two. I added the creature in the center with permanent marker. Next, I wove yarn, string, and cassette tape film through the loom. I then cut the hands out of paper bags and spray painted them red to add to the overwhelming feel of the color scheme. I finally attached the hands to the piece.
