"Caged In" explores transness, gender, and clothing. As a trans and genderqueer person, I have experienced a lot of dysphoria and difficulty in feeling stuck in the clothing that society assigns to my body. By dismantling and reforming my old clothes, then submerging them in liquid starch to stiffen the fabric, it depicts how some clothing can feel extremely uncomfortable because of the way that society genders it.
Caged In

The wire cage represents how I have felt boxed in by expectations of what I should wear, however, the clothing inside begins to slowly break out of the cage, proving that this metaphorical cage of societal expectations can in fact be dismantled and broken down. Ultimately, the ideal would be for anyone to feel comfortable in any clothing as this fabric that we drape over our bodies will not be gendered.
